Appendicitis

Appendicitis happens when the appendix becomes inflamed, usually due to a blockage. Here’s a simple explanation of why this occurs:

📌 Causes of Appendicitis:

  1. Blockage of the appendix opening – the most common cause.
    • This can be due to:
      • Hardened stool (called a fecalith)
      • Swollen lymph nodes (especially after an infection)
      • Parasites or tumors (less common)

  2. Bacterial infection – once blocked, bacteria can grow inside the appendix.
  3. Inflammation and swelling – the buildup of bacteria and pressure causes pain, swelling, and possible rupture if not treated.

⚠️ Why It’s Dangerous:

  • If untreated, the appendix can burst (rupture), spilling infected material into the abdomen.
  • This can lead to peritonitis, a life-threatening infection of the abdominal lining.

🔍 Symptoms to Watch For:

  • Sharp pain in the lower right abdomen
  • Fever
  • Nausea or vomiting
  • Loss of appetite
